I am one for mid week catch up with friends and there is no better way to do that than to go for and early bird after work! I love a good early bird menu, its a great way of frequenting your “top pick” restaurants for a fraction of the price ! ( we are all cost conscious in these recessionary times!)
A while back I met a friend Karen for some tasty treats at Campagne in Kilkenny, which serves modern French food. When I told her I had booked it she replied “ohh foncy!” , and she was right!
Located at 5 the arches, gashouse lane just outside the city center, it is really tucked away, but its a popular spot, well known, and well loved by not only locals, but many in between. I was instantly won over with the interior, lovely oak flooring, and curved banquette seating, it was bright, modern, and very classy!
Campagne is listed in the elite Bridgestone guide book’s Top 10 Places with Great Service, and chef/proprietor Garrett Byrne was also placed in the guide’s Top 10 Hot Chefs to Watch!
The menu had the right amount of choice, there was something for everyone. For starters I chose Duck sausage, served on crushed celeriac with apple chutney. It had the right amount of sausage saltiness which was perfect with the sweetness of the chutney, it was deliciously rich! Karen opted for the Terrine of free range pork, piccalilli with toasted walnut bread. For mains, I selected the Sea bream which was served with a tomato, courgette and cumin vinaigrette and crispy squid, (the squid was succulent, and was made in a tempura batter that was perfectly crispy and had the right amount of salt and pepper to give it a kick! ) I finished off my mammoth eating session with an apple frangipani tart!
With 2 courses at €24 and 3 courses for €29 what else would you do mid week but treat yourself!

Looks yummy! Take me! Take me!!!
